Chapter Twenty

JADE

Damn it. How did I not notice him? I was going to take the weekend to relax and get my head on straight. Meaning, to push him out of it. Now here he is, and my entire world is about to fall apart if I can’t get him to stop asking questions and let me leave. The last thing I need is my boss to find out about what’s going on in my life. I don’t want his pity, or worse, his “help”. I don’t need to be indebted to another man.

His blue eyes are staring down at me, and I can trace the threads of temper and concern. They’re disarming, and I force myself to look away from him before I sink into his gaze and end up telling him everything. I won’t let that happen. Instead of answering his question, I say tightly, “Go home, Asa. I’m not talking about anything. I’m tired and I want to go to bed.”

He’s silent for a moment, but I can feel his frustration pouring off him. “Jade,” he grits out. “Just talk to me.”

“No.” I shove at him, but he doesn’t budge. It’s like trying to move a wall. I snarl at him. “Asa, back the hell up,” I demand.

He narrows his eyes at me. “No,” he replies. “Answer me, Jade.”

“I don’t answer to you, Asa,” I snap, pushing him again even harder. This time he lets go and steps back, but barely. Just enough to give me half a breath of space. “Look, if this is because of what happened this afternoon and now you think you have some sort of claim over me, then you’re wrong. That was a mistake.”

“Not from where I’m standing,” he returns evenly. “In fact, I think it was a damn good idea. Especially since we both know we wanted it.”

I did want it, and that’s what terrifies me. Asa can break me if I let him get too close. “Look, if this is because you didn’t get to finish…”

He barks out a dry laugh. “You think this is because I didn’t get mine and I want you to finish the job?” he demands. “You can’t be serious, Sunshine. The only thing I want is to know why you’re working here, because we both know you’re making damn good money, even without the overtime you’ve been putting in lately. That tells me you’re in trouble. Now, do I need to repeat your options?”

“Screw you and your options,” I snarl at him. “I told you, Asa, you don’t own me. If I want to work in a club, then I can. Maybe I just like the idea of meeting new people,” I taunt him. “I mean, there were so many nice guys in there.”

His eyes go flinty. “Be very careful, Sunshine,” he warns me. “You’re baiting me, and I think we both know I’m not going to just sit back and take it. You’re running scared after this afternoon, fine, we’ll take shit slow, but I’m not walking away.
