Chapter Twenty
JADE
Damn it. How did I not notice him? I was going to take the weekend to relax and get my head on straight. Meaning, to push him out of it. Now here he is, and my entire world is about to fall apart if I canât get him to stop asking questions and let me leave. The last thing I need is my boss to find out about whatâs going on in my life. I donât want his pity, or worse, his âhelpâ. I donât need to be indebted to another man.
His blue eyes are staring down at me, and I can trace the threads of temper and concern. Theyâre disarming, and I force myself to look away from him before I sink into his gaze and end up telling him everything. I wonât let that happen. Instead of answering his question, I say tightly, âGo home, Asa. Iâm not talking about anything. Iâm tired and I want to go to bed.â
Heâs silent for a moment, but I can feel his frustration pouring off him. âJade,â he grits out. âJust talk to me.â
âNo.â I shove at him, but he doesnât budge. Itâs like trying to move a wall. I snarl at him. âAsa, back the hell up,â I demand.
He narrows his eyes at me. âNo,â he replies. âAnswer me, Jade.â
âI donât answer to you, Asa,â I snap, pushing him again even harder. This time he lets go and steps back, but barely. Just enough to give me half a breath of space. âLook, if this is because of what happened this afternoon and now you think you have some sort of claim over me, then youâre wrong. That was a mistake.â
âNot from where Iâm standing,â he returns evenly. âIn fact, I think it was a damn good idea. Especially since we both know we wanted it.â
I did want it, and thatâs what terrifies me. Asa can break me if I let him get too close. âLook, if this is because you didnât get to finishâ¦â
He barks out a dry laugh. âYou think this is because I didnât get mine and I want you to finish the job?â he demands. âYou canât be serious, Sunshine. The only thing I want is to know why youâre working here, because we both know youâre making damn good money, even without the overtime youâve been putting in lately. That tells me youâre in trouble. Now, do I need to repeat your options?â
âScrew you and your options,â I snarl at him. âI told you, Asa, you donât own me. If I want to work in a club, then I can. Maybe I just like the idea of meeting new people,â I taunt him. âI mean, there were so many nice guys in there.â
His eyes go flinty. âBe very careful, Sunshine,â he warns me. âYouâre baiting me, and I think we both know Iâm not going to just sit back and take it. Youâre running scared after this afternoon, fine, weâll take shit slow, but Iâm not walking away.
